  • This needs to be reinstated! Public Transit would allow visitors near and far the oppertunity to access and enjoy one of the most beatiful state parks.

  • I'm a State Parks employee who relies upon public transit for transportation, and I feel that we are losing out on a great resource by these two route deletions. Public transportation to a State Park is a great environmental plus as well as encourages community involvement.

  • Thanks for resuming this service.

  • this bus route is a real treasure. I have never experienced anything like it - allowing hikers and nature lovers to board a bus, go on the most beautiful hike on the planet - get back on a bus and arrive walking/biking distance from home - Save the planet!

  • I just tried to get to Big Basin via bus last weekend and was quite disappointed I couldn't. I have a back injury that makes car rides uncomfortable -- so I've been busing everywhere. But sadly discovered the Big Basin route was gone. My family ended up going without me and had to drive. I'd love to see the bus service come back!

  • Please restore this valuable service.

  • I have taken the bus up to Big Basin and hiked out to the coast about 5 times in the past 8 years. It is one of the most fun things to do in Santa Cruz County, IMO. I sincerely hope that it can be restored during summer weekends. Thank you for your consideration of our request.

  • The park is a wonderful resource that should be accessible to citizens through public transportation.

  • Please restore the bus service to Big Basin State Park. There are many students who don't drive that love to go up there and explore the redwoods. I have taken the bus myself and hiked all the way to the coast and the bus service was the only way I could get back to Santa Cruz. My husband and I both support keeping cars off of the road in these sensitive eco areas. Providing bus service on the weekends keeps many cars out of the park. It's a win win for everyone and the environment. Thanks for your time.

  • The summer bus service to Big Basin is wonderful. I've taken the bus up, hiked to the coast, and caught the bus back. Please seriously consider restoring this service.

  • Service to Big Basin is important for local residents, and it could also become an important part of promoting ecotourism in this area.

  • I am a seior citizen who loves gettin some friend togethr for a day at BIg Basin but we can't always drive and not having a bus has made these wonderful outings been very limited. Please bring it back!!

  • Please, please, I beg of you to let us have this FABULOUS WEEKEND TRANSPORTATION SERVICE, TO AND FROM BIG BASIN STATE PARK! FOR US AND FUTURE GENERATIONS! I had planned to introduce my 7 grandchildren to this MAGNIFICENT PARK THIS YEAR (starting from park headquaters to Waddel Beach). When I found out the service was no longer on, I WAS DEVASTATED!

  • Please please bring the Big Basin bus service back! So many college students in this area as well as world travelers who are used to traveling with public transportation. Then's there are us who like to hike from the top to the bottom of the Tree to Sea trail and use public transportation. Thank you for your help.

  • Really enjoyed the walk down from Big Basin to Highway 1 a year or more ago! Hope the service gets restored!

  • Wonderful service ... please continue:-)

  • Would be wonderful!

  • Big Basin is a treasure for people of all ages. Bus service would enable more people to visit and reduce parking problems at Big Basin. I strongly urge restoration of both these bus routes.

  • Such an important service should be maintained.

  • loved that bus service. would use it again.

  • Please consider re-establishing this bus route --it's something that is uniquely Santa Cruz: bus, not drive, to our fabulous redwoods and hike to the sea -- where else? I'm happy to pay more fare to make it happen. Thank you.

  • This bus provided a convenient means for hikers to day hike from Big Basin SP to Waddell Beach, which I have done several times. Please bring this great service back.

  • Please--it makes a big difference!

  • Love the hike. Count on the bus service.

  • Big Basin should be for everyone to enjoy, not just those who own automobiles!

  • I can understand not having the service during the winter months, but certainly for summer it would be great to have the weekend bus service!

  • please

  • Please restore these valuable community bus routes.

  • Please restore this service. Thank You.

  • i grew up in boulder creek and as a teenager and young adult i used this bus service to get a ride up to big basin. i was just telling my teen daughter about big basin, and how id ride a bus up there with friends and spend the day. i would like to experience this with her and my younger daughter one day. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS AWAY!!! maybe charge an extra 75 cents or something, if the gas is too much, but its really needed for the community!!!!

  • I used to ride this route up to Big Basin for a hike or run. Please bring it back!

  • Many teens live up near Big Basin and are dependent on bus service to get around. Eliminating and reducing the service to that area has become a safety issue for them, as they now have to try to find alternate ways of getting up 236.

  • A very popular hike depends on this bus service.

  • Please have bike racks on the bus

  • As avid hikers, we'd love to see this service restored and drive our cars less.

  • These routes need to be preserved. The service makes the park accessible to more (tax paying) hikers. They also reduce traffic and help to improve air quality.

  • This is an important recreational and transportation option. Let's get the cars off of the roads thanks

  • This would be good for the community, the park, and the environment!

  • We really love these bus routes, and would love to see them back in operation. Thank you!

  • ABSOLUTELY "BIG BASIN" get back on line. I will pay more taxes. Hurry, the park is going to be vandalized if public doesn't attend!

  • Please restore these routes to Big Basin I always recommend them to our many visitors from England who do not want to have to drive/drive on the right Thank you

  • Please restore the bus going to Big Basin and Waddell.

  • In full support of the restoration of bus service to Big Basin Redwoods State Park!

  • I often ride the bus to Big Basin to reduce the harmful emissions from my car. There is also limited parking available at Big Basin, which restoration of the bus route would help alleviate.

  • I'm not comfortable driving the roads in Santa Cruz mountains and prefer a professional driver and watch the scenery

  • This route is important to Big Basin to help residents of the area visit and to continue to bring this much needed revenue to this amazing park.

  • In addition to the arguments in the petition, as a regular visitor of Big Basin on weekends and often see the parking lots near capacity, with folks driving around hunting for a parking spot. It would help all visitors to the park to reduce the traffic on the highway into the park as well as congestion in the parking lots. Since the park has fewer visitors in the winter, perhaps the route could be trimmed at that time of the year.

  • I think this is a great idea!

  • To reinstate this would be great for the park and families without transportation. Along with many other benefits, the park offers camps and groups for kids age 0-12.

  • Let me know what I can do to help. We are the first to loose services in the County and the last to get them back.

  • Please support Big Basin State Park!

  • Public transit is a good thing. Big Basin is magic. Let people experience magic without hassling with cars.

  • Please bring it back!

  • This a great and important service!

  • I really miss being able to take a car-free day trip to Big Basin, specifically the Waddell Creek side. There were times when I'd bump into people riding the 40 south who'd spent the day hiking all the way from the headquarters. I was incredibly sad to see the 40 go, and am crossing my fingers it'll be restored asap. Thanks!

  • I don't have a car, and it was really great to be able to get out to our amazing resource of Big Basin with something more reliable than hitch-hiking.

  • Please restore this service to the wonders of Big Basin!

  • I have taken the but to Big Basin in the past and it is a great service that should be restored. There were several other hikers on the bus, as well. Thank you for your consideration.

  • This valley desperately needs some good things to happen!!! Please bring back the big basin bus...

  • Such a shame!

  • If this service is too expensive, I would support charging at the excursion ($5.00) fare. It is beautiful way to support a unique recreational opportunity via public transit. This is the bus that I took to my wedding.

  • We look forward to visiting Big Basin and being able to hike there without driving!

  • please. for the sake of a healthy and HAPPY community!!

  • Please please PLEASE keep this route open. I use it frequently during the summer months. Thank you for your consideration!

  • This is my favorite bus route! Please don't cut this. It has enabled me to hike the tree to sea for many years. It is a service to the community that the Transit System can be proud of. Consider the exhaust you are preventing and the reputation you are building as a company concerned for the environment and one that promotes 'Green' solutions. I humbly ask that you restore this valuable transportation alternative. Thank you!

  • I'd love to get to Big Basin and Little Basin with this service. Please bring it back!!

  • Keep up the great work.

  • This service has been invaluable to traffic control and give all of us the opportunity to enjoy Big Basin.

  • My son Eli is two years old, and I would love to begin experiencing day trip adventures by bike, bus and hiking with him. This would be so special to be able to take the bus all the way to Big Basin! We could even do an overnight camping trip someday!!

  • Opening up Big Basin to folks who do not have a car for whatever reason is what Big Basin was intended for! Restoring the bus route is truly contributing to the health of folks and the healing of Big Basin provides.

  • As a docent at Big Basin I hear comments about how visitors would like to use the total bus connection to complete the Big Basin to the sea loop. With publicity from the Visitors Bureau and the Sentinel I think these routes could definately be profitable and a great opportunity for area visitors and locals alike. Living in Aptos I would use 35A route during the summer when coming to the park to lead programs.

  • Big basin is a true wonder it would be awesome for students and residents to be able to reach the park via bus once again!

  • With the bus one can make a day trip from SC to BB by bus, hike to the ocean and then return to SC on the bus. My family enjoyed this outing.

  • This is our oldest park in Calif. we need as much access to it for people to enjoy this God given wonder.

  • We need this route! Thx!

  • The loop with the two bus connections is a great way for me, my family and hiking guests to explore the wonders of big basin without adding another fossil fuel engine to detract from the pleasure of the day. Please join my in signing this petition!

  • I volunteer at Big Basin and having bus service really helps me to do so.

  • It is a great way to get to the park. There are not enough parking places for all that now have to drive. Last time I drove I had 2 park almost a mile away from the Visitor center.

  • Bring them both back.

  • I would love to be able to take the bus and hike form Big Basin to the sea and get a bus to my home on the Westside.

  • I used to ride this route several times in the summer to hike in Big Basin, and also to hike down to Waddell Beach and take the #40 back to town. Since the service stopped, I do less volunteering at Big Basin because I feel bad about using so much gas driving up there and back. Taking the bus always seemed a better way to enjoy a day spent outside in the fresh air, because I wasn't adding any smog from my own car.

I urge you to begin running all the way to Big Basin and to Waddell Beach so I can do some of those hikes again. Thanks for your consideration.

  • There have been so many cut backs in past years in the Santa Cruz Metro system that it is difficult for low income people and people with out cars to get to the park system. We must protect peoples access to the park system.

  • Restoring bus service would allow city dwellers to access the scenic wonders of Big Basin without driving a car.

  • The bus route allows for access to the parks for those without transportation. What a great low cost way to spend the day. It also gives some folks an alternative to driving, and hopefully reducing traffic in the area.

  • More Busses Please

  • During the week would be great too!

  • Access to our public parks should not be limited to those who own cars. Please restore this important service.

  • Please continue service to promote viable public transportation to the state park.

  • The #40 & 35A extension routes were a wonderful part of SCMT's service. Please restore them. Thank You.

  • In the past I have had wonderful hikes from the redwoods to the sea with no worries about car shuttles or how to get where I wanted to be. I hope the bus can come back.

  • This bus was the only means of getting into the park when I did not have somebody's ride.

  • I've been volunteering at Big Basin for over a decade, and have met many people over the years who were able to visit the park because of the bus. It was especially helpful for people who wanted to hike the Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail and take the bus home from Waddell Beach. Please restore these bus routes. Thank you!

  • We love to tell our guests that it is possible to take the bus to Big Basin. Usually our guests like to have hikes in this wonderful state park without the need to drive the car over there.

  • In addition, I'd like to implore the SC Metro to consider improving the service of the Hwy 17 Express. It would benefit myself and many others, if there were 2 or 3 Hwy 17 buses that made a brief stop at the summit and in Los Gatos once a day. This has been a "hole in the system" for many years and caused people to lose their jobs or buy a car if they wanted to keep their service jobs in Los Gatos. Please let me know your thoughts on this and if there are any ways I can help get this signifigant improvement added, so myself & others can "get back on the bus".

    Thank you.

  • We need as many buses as possible, the more people, the more protection for this isolating and currently being piliaged redwood state park. PLEASE HURRY.

  • Please restore the bus service to Big Basin. I am member of the RTC's Elderly and Disabled Awareness Task Force and a docent at Big Basin. Providing bus service will open the park to a wider community including the disabled and those without access to autos.

  • My friends and I had a wonderful, memorable state park experience in Big Basin State Park, with no car use, when we took this bus service from Santa Cruz up to park HQ and then hiked down the Skyline to Sea Trail to the coast where we caught the return bus on Highway 1.

  • I agree! Makes no sense not have this service! I hope they find a way to put these bus routes back in service.

  • Restoration of the service, along with effective promotion of its use, will benefit our environment, through the reduction of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.

  • I liked taking the bus up to big basin, doing skyline to the see, and being able to catch the bus back. I'd like to be able to do it again!

  • We have taken the big basin bus to hike in Big Basin over the years and it is a fabulous way to get up to that area. Way too many cars on the road and any way to increase and improve our local bus service with totally benefit our community and environment! Thanks.

  • Looking forward to hiking from Big Basin to the coast without driving a car. This is a wonderful service that should be restored. Thank You.

  • Please restore summer weekend service to Big Basin. This is the time of year when many people are on vacation and want to enjoy the trails in the park without driving individual vehicles to do so.

  • While I don't personally use this service, I know some who do. Some are handicapped and would have no other way to visit this treasure.

  • That bus provides us with such a great opportunity to be in the outdoors while not polluting the air with our individual cars. We need both of those things.

  • I believe that it is vitally important to have bus service available to the rural residents of our county. The logistics of life in the country make it much more difficult for folks to get from point A to point B. I hope that you can make room in the budget to allow some service to be restored.

  • The bus service enabled an amazing hike without dependence on automobiles!

  • These services would gain a large following among hikers especially - just a little promotion to get the service well known would be enough I'm sure. What an opportunity for a naturalist to be on board and give a talk, as well. Wouldn't that be great!

  • Santa Cruz needs more mass transportation and these buses are invaluable to those of us who live in the city and to our many guests who love to visit here.

  • This bus route was one of Santa Cruz's most wonderful hidden assets--and a sustainability gem. I have fond memories of the all-day car-free Big Basin trips that it made possible. With some judiciously placed advertising & publicity, it could become a big draw for visitors & locals alike!

  • Please reinstate this bus line!

  • Santa Cruz is my favorite place on earth!! Transportation to it is needed :)

  • Hopefully, you can add this route, even if it's just for the summer. It would help the hikers so much and get us OUT OF OUR CARS.

  • We love the hike to the Coast and used to bring visitors there regularly. Restoring the bus routes to Big Basin will certainly be an enormous help and will be very popular.

  • Please restore the #35A and the #40 bus routes for Santa Cruz residents and visitors. Also, please continue to expand bus service routes in all areas of Santa Cruz County. This will allow and/or enhance alternate choices for citizens who don't drive, and for all those who are working to greatly reduce auto-use and resultant toxic emissions.

  • Less cars + more jobs = good thing!

  • We have enjoyed this bus ride in the past and are looking forward to riding to Big Basin again. Please consider reinstating the route.

  • We LOVE to go hiking in Big Basin and bring out of town guests there any chance we get! The bus service lets us leave the car at home!!! The bus route opens up MORE opportunities for hikers to enjoy the Skyline to the Sea trail (not worrying about how to retrieve the car from the trail head) and encourages younger or non-car-owning park-enthusiasts to hike, explore and love this local treasure! Please restore the bus service.

  • Please restore the Big Basin bus service!

  • i love to hike and i haven't been up there yet!

  • Please restore both of these routes.

I have been planning a backpacking trip from Palo Alto to the coast via Big Basin for several years, and the service cuts have completely thrown a wrench into my plans.

My plan was to hike from Palo Alto to Black Mountain, then over into either Portola or Castle Rock SP, then into Big Basin, ending at Waddell Creek, and then catching the bus into Santa Cruz, and the 17 Express back to the Santa Clara Valley.

Now I have to plan an extra night, as well as a hike up US1 to Davenport, and if it's a weekend, a long wait for the rest of the day, leaving me less than 90 minutes to spend in Santa Cruz before I have to catch the last 17 Express.

When I initially started planning this trip, there were two good public transit options, now there is one, and it's very sub-optimal.

  • In the past I have taken the Metro routes to both Big Basin and Waddell Creek and found them to be wonderful ways to explore our natural surrondings without putting an additional car on the road.

  • I would use both of these routes regularly if they were returned to service. I can't visit Big Basin now even though I live on the road that accesses it, but I would hike there at least once or twice a month if I could get there.

  • I don't drive a car. Ever. Please bring back this bus.

  • Please restore summer bus service to Big Basin!

  • As a senior who wants to be able to hike for health while enjoying the beauty of the State Park system, I urge the Metro Board of Directors to re-instate these two routes.

  • Please restore bus service to Big Basin State Park, making this unique natural area available by public transportation. As a senior, I can't walk or drive to the park. I would gladly pay for the bus trip there and back.

  • I used use the Waddell Creek bus as my main way to get to Santa Cruz while in high school. It has gotten me home several times when I had car trouble. I even would have used it to commute to work. Unfortunately it would would never allow me to get enough hours at work between getting to SC and returning. I would consider it again now that my schedule is more flexible. I even remember when there was a Swanton Road service bus. It seems that the only routes that are ever added service UCSC. While most others are reduced. Service to UCSC is not bad, I am just jealous.

Please consider returning service to this often neglected portion of the county.

  • Such an important link on a weekend!

  • Please restore both of these lines! They were a great asset to Santa Cruz recreation and tourism.

  • I'd like to see this running again so I and others could complete car-free hiking trips through Big Basin!

  • I'd love to see bus service to Big Basin and Waddell Creek return!

  • it is costly to the environment and to the individuals to have to arrange for shuttles to hike these trails. with the reality of climate change, public transportation is a most appropriate remedy.
