SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION,
NOT HIGHWAY WIDENING
To the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission:
We want a November 2016 ballot measure that contains adequate funding for Metro, the rail trail, safe routes for all travel modes, transportation demand management, passenger rail and maintaining local streets and roads—one that is environmentally sustainable and helps shape livable communities without new sprawl. We would strongly support such a measure.
However we do not support a measure that would provide funds—estimated at over $100 million—to widen Highway 1 between Soquel Drive and State Park Drive.
Widening highways to relieve traffic congestion is an outdated, ineffective and unsustainable strategy that just leads over time to bigger, equally congested highways.
The current Caltrans EIR finds that widening Highway 1 will have at best a marginal effect on reducing traffic congestion. And that's with the unscientific assumption that widening would not induce new travel.
Widening Highway 1 will increase Greenhouse Gas emissions, contrary to California State law and policy, and contrary to ethical action for a planet in peril.
In 2004, the people of Santa Cruz County soundly defeated Measure J, which called for the widening of Highway 1.
WE REQUEST THE REMOVAL OF HIGHWAY 1 WIDENING PROJECTS FROM THE PROPOSED $450 MILLION TRANSPORTATION TAX EXPENDITURE PLAN.
